What is natural henna?
Natural henna is a paste made from the dried and ground leaves of Lawsonia inermis, a shrub native to tropical regions. Applied to the skin, it produces a warm brown stain that intensifies over 48 hours and lasts between 10 and 15 days.
Henna has been used for over 5,000 years to adorn the body during ceremonies, celebrations and rites of passage. It is practiced in North Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and increasingly in the West.
Natural henna vs "black henna" — the vital difference
"Black henna" is not henna. It's a chemical mixture containing PPD (paraphenylenediamine), an industrial dye that can cause:
- Chemical burns
- Severe allergic reactions
- Permanent scarring
- PPD sensitization making future hair colouring impossible
Natural henna is brown, never black. Its shade ranges from copper to chocolate depending on the body area, application time and paste quality. At Ririhenna, the composition is simple: henna powder, water, essential oils, sugar. Nothing else.
How to prepare for a session
- Exfoliate the area the day before to remove dead skin
- Avoid creams and oils on the day — henna adheres better to clean, dry skin
- Allow time — the paste should remain on the skin for 2 to 6 hours for optimal results
- Wear dark clothing — the paste can stain fabric
After application — extending the life
- Don't wet the area for the first 12 hours
- Apply a daily blend of coconut oil + lemon
- Avoid scrubs, chlorine and repeated friction
- The final stain appears at 48 hours — be patient
Henna is universal
Henna belongs to no single culture or religion. It is a body art practiced across continents, for all occasions — weddings, religious celebrations, births, or simply the pleasure of wearing an ephemeral design.
At Ririhenna, all traditions and styles are welcome: khaleeji, Indian, Moroccan, contemporary, minimalist.
Frequently asked questions
Is natural henna safe?
Yes. Natural henna (Lawsonia inermis) has been used for millennia with no known side effects. It is only contraindicated in cases of rare allergy to the plant, and not recommended for children under 3 as a precaution.
How long does a henna design last?
A natural henna design lasts between 10 and 15 days, depending on the body area, aftercare and skin type. Palms and fingers last the longest.
Is henna painful?
No. Application is painless — the paste is applied on the surface, like a drawing. No needles, no incisions.
Can you choose the colour of henna?
Natural henna gives a shade ranging from copper to chocolate brown. It is impossible to get black with pure henna — any "black" henna contains chemicals to avoid.
